From Prophecy Mists to Hildesheim Trenches
When navigating the crushing, grief-stricken universe of Dymna Lotva, one rarely expects to stumble into a blackout party. Yet, the extreme underground is a magnificent web of contradictions. For those who stepped inside the Balver Höhle during Prophecy Fest 2026, the side-project Hangover in Minsk delivered one of the most exhilarating, unhinged surprises of the weekend. Despite a punishing schedule overlap that cut my initial viewing short, the brief sermon I witnessed was nothing short of fantastic. It was an instant, intoxicating revelation and on Saturday, 10th October, The Mistweaver will be tracking them down once again as they bring their chaotic ritual to Hildesheim.
Musically, Hangover in Minsk operates at the absolute outer edge of the modern Depressive Suicidal Black Metal (DSBM) spectrum. While traditional purists try to confine the genre to slow, suffocating doom tempos, this project channels their trauma through a jagged layer of post-punk and heavy rock ‘n’ roll swagger.
However, let there be no mistake: this is not casual, light-hearted music. The driving, catchy grooves are entirely deceptive. Much like the historic blueprint laid down by Sweden’s Lifelover, these rhythmic tempos represent a manic, desperate flight from reality, the audible manifestation of trying to drown out severe clinical depression, urban isolation, and the heavy grief of displacement through reckless escapism. Underneath the infectious momentum lies a frantic, throat-tearing vocal rasp that carries the exact same agonizing, visceral pain as their main project. It is a beautiful, deeply unsettling paradox where the body wants to move to the rhythm, but the soul is forced to confront absolute despair.
For the unbending followers of the scene, this Hildesheim gig is a vital opportunity to witness the genre’s structural versatility. Hangover in Minsk proves that true DSBM capability isn’t just about weeping in the dark; sometimes, it’s about staring the abyss in the eye, raising a glass, and dancing through the ruins.
