On Friday, 23rd October, the subterranean tunnels of the Matrix Bochum, affectionately known to the Ruhrpott underground as “The Tube”, became the focal point for one of the most vital, bittersweet subcultural events of the season. Organised with clockwork precision by Stage Secrets Management, the evening was far from a standard promotional tour stop, bringing the monumental, career-spanning tribute set back to Bochum.
The atmosphere in the venue was dense from the moment doors opened at 18:30. This wasn’t a crowd looking for cheap entertainment; it was a gathering of dedicated disciples who have carried this music close to their chests for years, all waiting to witness an uncompromising night.
Marschland: The Stripped-Back Sermon
Opening the evening at exactly 19:30, Marschland set an incredibly bleak, intimate foundation for the night. For the true insiders in the crowd, seeing Selek, the brilliant creative mastermind behind Hamburg legends Fäulnis, step onto the stage was a spectacular showcase of artistic versatility.
Armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a raw, unpolished vocal delivery, Marschland stripped away the typical walls of distortion to expose the bare, bleeding bones of his songwriting. He navigated his set with a harrowing, narrative focus, utilising the German language to paint vivid, asphalt-stained portraits of urban decay and existential isolation. His delivery relied heavily on a distinctive, half-spoken, half-strangled vocal tracking style, a signature grit that fans of Fäulnis instantly recognised, yet here it felt devastatingly naked. It was a compelling, minimalistic sermon that completely bypassed lazy genre tropes. The stark contrast of hearing such visceral, heavy emotional “depressive Scheissmusik” delivered in a quiet, fragile format completely transfixed the early crowd, proving that genuine darkness doesn’t require a wall of amplifiers to slice through a room.
Amimia: The Smoldering Post-Black Abyss
At 20:15, the regional support shifted into a massive wall of sound as Amimia took command of the Matrix stage. Bringing a heavy, atmosphere-heavy post-black metal weight to the billing, the band delivered a performance rooted in deep, suffocating tension.
Their arrangement was a masterclass in dynamic friction, blending freezing, cascading riffs and cavernous, blast-beat driven percussion with slow-burning, melancholic synth beds. Rather than mimicking standard, monotonous DSBM tropes, Amimia showcased exceptional songwriting capability by leaning heavily into complex, multi-layered rhythmic shifts and discordant guitar harmonies that felt intensely engulfing. The live mix was exceptionally clear, allowing their dense, layered compositions to breathe within the industrial concrete architecture of the venue. The vocal performance was an absolute stand-out, cutting through the dense guitar smoke with piercing, high-pitched shrieks of utter desolation. Amimia acted as the perfect sonic bridge, darkening the skies of the Ruhrpott and priming the audience for the unhinged chaos that was about to follow
Lifelover: The Triumph of the Unhinged Masterpiece
At 21:15, the lights dimmed, the crowd surged against the barrier, and the collective force of Kall playing Lifelover launched into their massive headline performance with the opening friction of “Shallow”.
Experience Kim’s legendary, visceral stage presence was nothing short of a revelation. Kim does not merely perform; he embodies the absolute, chaotic reality of severe clinical depression and urban isolation. His vocal mechanics were spectacular, shifting effortlessly from agonising, throat-tearing shrieks of raw torment to haunting, spoken-word whispers that wrapped around the room like a heavy fog.
The tracking structure was a dream for long-term devotees of their catalog, pulling heavily from Konkurs and Pulver. The mid-tempo, infectious post-punk grooves of “Stockholm” and “En sång om dig” turned the floor into a frantic, driving sea of movement. The true emotional peak of the evening arrived right in the centre of the set, when the band executed a devastating triple-sequence: “Expandera”, sliding directly into the clinical weight of “Mitt Öppna Öga”, and culminating in the blistering hostility of “Nackskott”.
The onstage chemistry within the line-up was palpable. The driving basslines and discordant piano samples provided a rock-solid, wood-carved foundation for Kim’s erratic, unpredictable energy. By the time they closed the curtains with the chaotic, confrontational double-punch of “Lethargy” and “Major Fuck Off”, the message was absolute. This tour is not a redundant exercise in nostalgia or a cheap cash-grab; it is a vital, living archive. It proved that B’s unmatched musical capability and dark romanticism remain an untouchable, eternal force in the extreme underground.
I extends my formal gratitude to Stage Secrets Management for granting our platform media hospitality for this exceptional evening. Their ongoing, untamed dedication to curating high-stakes, uncompromising underground lineups across the regional circuit remains an absolute lifeline for the extreme metal community.
