Mortiis-Ghosts of Europa

Better late than never!

Back in May, when we had that interview, I never imagined a release could take me on such a wild, cathartic emotional rollercoaster. I never stopped spinning this record, no matter how hard some lyrics hit right in the feels – possibly less in the way they were intended, but in the way my brain perceived them.
Thank you, Havard Ellefsen for the lyrical and of course musical journey you are providing, with every single record released.
Here’s my personal interpretation of one of my favourite songs incl. the Top 3 track rating according to hours listened.

Mortiis’ new album, Ghosts of Europa, released in June 2026, features a couple of punching lyrics in a beautiful, darkwave-industrial rock kind of packaging.

A personal standout is “The Faith That Fades Away” – not because of its literal themes of religious devotion or loss of faith, but because the lyrics mirror the exhausting, tangled dynamic of an avoidant (platonic) relationship. Lines like “You get so close / I want to disappear” capture that specific, hollow panic of the avoidant (platonic) partner, even when you never took up too much space to begin with.

The track walks a complex tightrope of resentment and longing. In the chorus, the cold, protective defense “Don’t wanna feel your touch / I don’t wanna hear your voice / Leave me with my sins.” exposes the frustrating desire for the person who pulled away to finally face their own actions, to carry the weight of regret instead of retreating behind an impenetrable wall and leaving you with the wreckage. It is a raw piece about the friction of wanting absolute distance, yet desperately wishing the other person had to reckon with what they broke. – While they let you go, long ago.
