Review: The 69 Eyes – Brandon Lee (Forma Acustica)
If our ongoing war against the extreme scene’s gatekeepers requires a definitive weapon, it is the glorious, un-black-metal-y romance of the Helsinki Vampires. For nearly four decades, The 69 Eyes have stood as the undisputed kings of leather-jacket-clad, cigarette-smoke goth rock – marrying the sleazy swagger of rock ‘n’ roll with pure, desaturated heartbreak. Fresh off an exhaustive global touring cycle, the band has taken a bold, stripped-back detour. Serving as the flagship single for their upcoming early 2027 album Acustica, their new rendition of “Brandon Lee (Forma Acustica)” is a complete, spine-chilling experience.
Originally released on the seminal 2000 record Blessed Be, “Brandon Lee” has long stood as an untouchable pinnacle of gothic rock. Written as a tragic, deeply poetic homage to the late actor Brandon Lee, who lost his life during the filming of the masterpiece The Crow (1994).
The ultimate gothic cult classic, and James O’Barr’s dark work is intimately tied to the music scene. However, stripping the track down to its darker, organic core reveals something entirely transcendent, the track carries an immense emotional gravity.
Hollowing out the electric, arena-ready foundations of the original version allows the track to breathe within a fragile, skeletal acoustic landscape. The result is a slow-burning masterpiece. The acoustic bass is an absolute triumph, warm, deep, and beautifully prominent, pulsing underneath the weeping acoustic strings to ground the composition with an organic, wood-carved weight.
But the true crown of this rearrangement belongs to Jyrki 69. His signature velvet vocals have aged like an expensive wine or a top-shelf barrelled whisky; weathered, robust, and dripping with an ancient, dark-romantic authority. Shifting away from amplified rock energy to showcase pure melodic intimacy, his low baritone delivery feels incredibly close, wrapping around the listener like a heavy autumn fog.
The Mistweaver’s Verdict
For the close-minded purists who dismiss everything that lacks a lo-fi distortion pedal, Brandon Lee (Forma Acustica) is a stark reminder that true darkness lies in the atmosphere, not the volume. It is a gorgeous, bittersweet triumph that leaves us counting down the days until the full album drops in 2027. While the band is set to take this acoustic ritual on a concert hall tour of Finland this coming February, we can only pray they bring these acoustic mists across the borders soon after. The gothic flame burns eternal.
